Treasury of Atreus - Tomb of Agamemnon
This enormous tomb called a tholos was built 3,300 years ago. It was built into the hillside in a beehive shape. Kings were buried in this chamber with all of their worldly possessions. After the burial ceremony the tomb was covered over with dirt from the mountainside. Atreus was the King of Mycenae and the father of Agamemnon. Only a cyclops could have lifted these heavy stones and built the walls of this tomb.
No one really knows which king was buried in the Treasury of Atreus. When archaeologist Schliemann found the tomb it had already been found by grave robbers and all its treasures were gone.
