Sphinx of Naxos
The officials of Naxos made pilgrimages to Delphi often to consult with the oracle. They were wealthy and paid well for the advice they were given. They gave the Sphinx of Naxos to the city. Following is the inscription on the base of the this statue -"Delphi accorded the Naxians the right of Promanteia" - this means the Naxians had the right to "go first" to see the oracle.
