The Cog Railway
Due to the steep mountains a unique railway system was built to improve transportation of people and goods from the coast to the mountains and back. The train track is constructed with a toothed central rail and the engine had a cog wheel at its base. As the engine climbs the cog would spin and hook onto the "teeth" which helped pulled the train upwards on the mountain. This cog railway winds it way through the beautiful Vouraikos Gorge. As we chugged along we passed through canyon walls, saw caves with rock formations and saw rushing water in the river besides the tracks.
