Archaeological Site of Mystras
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire arose in Eastern Europe and the parts of the middle east. Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire when the city of Constantinople was built in what is now Turkey around 330 AD. The Byzantine Empire lasted until 1400's.
The Byzantine culture flourished in Mystras from 1262 through 1460. Tucked up in the hillside near Sparta this mystical religious site lies quietly in the sun, and soft breezes of the mountains air.
Mystras lies serpent like along the hillsides of the Taygetos Mountains. Some of remains of this site are several Byzantine Churches, two ancient gates, a convent and church that are still occupied, the Palace of the Despots, and a Castle at the top of the mountain.
