Pan the Satyr
Pan was the son of a nymph and Hermes, a Satyr - half man/half goat, and he had the power to control nature. His homeland was the mountain forests of Arcadia on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Pan had enormous strength, could transform items of nature, run long distances, and produce a scream that frightened humans to running away in panic. In one version of the Battle of Marathon, Pheidippides the runner from Athens to Sparta, came upon Pan as he dashed across the Arcadian Mountains. Pan offered his help in the battle if the Athenians would agree to worship him in their city. Pan's offer was accepted. He caused "panic" among the Persian's soldiers which helped the Greeks defend against the larger number of troops. The Athenians upheld their agreement and thereafter had shrine's to honor Pan in their city.
Pan
Pan is described as a mischievous god who liked to woo the nymphs, young
maidens, and Goddesses for their favors. He had the power
to control things in nature, was strong, could run far,
and cause humans to run in fear by either his
presence or his scream. Pan played the reed flute.
The flute has reeds of different lengths tied together.
