The Churches
The archaeological site consists of a cluster of churches across the mountainside. Atop the mountain is the castle that protected the settlement. The remoteness of this location kept it flourishing for 200 years. When the Ottomans conquered Greece, the settlement continued to develop with both Christian and Muslim influences. As we walked the serpentine paths, we visited the churches. They were built from stones of the mountains, and from remanents of the Roman Empire. The common feature of these churches is their arched ceilings and four equal acloves that form a cross pattern. Their walls and ceilings are filled with frescoes depicting the teaching of their religious beliefs.
Some of the churches we visited in Mystras were:
Church of St. Nikolas
Church of Agia Sophia
Church of Pantanassa
