The Sanctuary of Olympia was a religious site. Every four years Greek citizens would travel here for a religious festival that honored the God, Zeus and watch (or participate) in the Olympic Games. The site had a large temple to honor Zeus and a smaller temple to honor Hera. Other buildings at the site included the Gymnasium, Palaestra, and Phillippeion. A statue of Nike overlooked the Olympian's winner circle.
