Background Information - Delphi
In ancient times Delphi was the place to come for advice from the Gods.
Delphi was the center of the earth, created by Mother Earth, Gaea.
A priestess, called the Pythia, relayed messages from Gaea coming out of the
depths of the ground she slept on. The priestess was guarded by Gaea's son Python.
Zeus sent Apollo to Delphi to capture the Pythia for himself.
Apollo killed the guardian, Python, and claimed the sacred area for his own.
The Pythia became the voice of Apollo and the other gods of Mount Olympus. During these times people traveled from many places to get advice from the oracle.
Ancient Delphi was also the location of the Pythian Games which included music, dance and drama competitions as well as athletic competitions.
